Appointed by Pave Aways, Hughes:O’Hanlon Architects is delivering the refurbishment and re-imagining of Wellington Market as part of the ongoing regeneration of Wellington town centre. Supported by UK Government funding and Telford & Wrekin Council, the project will revitalise one of the town’s most important community assets while safeguarding its long-term future.
One of a number of regeneration projects within Wellington’s conservation area to which we are appointed, the scheme forms part of the wider investment and transformation taking place across the borough. The proposals seek to enhance Wellington Market’s role as a retail, food and leisure destination, creating a more flexible and welcoming environment for traders, visitors and community events.
The refurbishment includes the careful restoration of the existing building, addressing significant property defects and improving accessibility, circulation and visibility throughout the market. Works also extend into the surrounding public realm, with enhancements to Market Street and Church Street designed to strengthen the market’s connection to the wider town centre and create attractive spaces for visitors to gather and socialise.
Delivered in phases to support the continued operation of the market, the scheme includes refurbished trader units, upgraded public facilities and the creation of new food and dining spaces within ‘The Cow Shed’. Care has been taken throughout to retain and enhance the market’s historic character while introducing modern interventions that support its continued use for generations to come.
The project builds on our growing portfolio of regeneration work within Wellington and reflects our continued commitment to delivering sensitive, place-led design that supports thriving town centres and local communities.
