The Orbit, Wellington

The Capital Regeneration Programme is funding the restoration of the community enterprise-owned Wellington Orbit. The project further adds to a culture and arts focus in the historic core of the town centre, complimenting and stimulating the growing food and drink offer and providing a point of difference for the town as an alternative destination to nearby Telford.

Hughes:O’Hanlon Architects is appointed by Pave Aways for full RIBA Stage 2-7 duties for the development of this valued cultural asset, building on the current cinema and café offer to restore and re-model the current vacant and dilapidated upper floors.

The provision of multi-functional community spaces for exhibitions, performing arts and community outreach services will increase the venue’s viability and secure a sustainable future for the former bank building.

Located on a prominent gateway site adjacent to the town’s Victorian train station, the building has a history spanning over 300 years having variously served as an inn, hotel, ironmongers, tailor’s shop and finally as a bank for over a century.
