Appointed to design and oversee the delivery of the second phase of the FAW Headquarters at Hensol, Hughes:O’Hanlon Architects developed a significant extension to the National Football Development Centre in collaboration with Willis Construction and the wider consultant team.
The project strengthens the high-performance environment supporting the Cymru National Teams and the wider Association, delivering expanded training, sports science, analysis and media facilities alongside new office and meeting spaces. Central to the scheme is the Wynnstay 1876 lecture theatre and media suite, referencing the FAW’s heritage and origins in Wrexham while providing a contemporary space for team preparation and international media engagement.
Sustainability formed a key part of the design approach, with the new wing incorporating solar panels, upgraded building management systems and landscaped areas designed to support local biodiversity.
Representing a major long-term investment in Welsh football infrastructure, the project reflects the FAW’s continued commitment to creating a modern, flexible and collaborative headquarters capable of supporting the future success of Welsh football at all levels.
