Another in Telford & Wrekin’s regeneration projects in Wellington town centre, Hughes:O’Hanlon Architects was appointed by Pave Aways for the RIBA Stage 3-6 design and delivery of a re-built property within the town-centre conservation area.
The currently derelict property is not listed but holds a pivotal role as a gateway to the vibrant heart of the town as the endpoint of Duke and Crown Street.
The proposed design aims to capture this essence, ensuring that the new building stands as a symbol of arrival and transition. The project appears to be two adjoining properties, reflecting the unplanned organic historical development of the town centre.
Preserving the scale and character of the existing buildings is fundamental to the project, with consideration given to the original scale, size and height of the existing properties as well as surrounding buildings and architectural context.
Located in a bustling retail pedestrian area, the sensitively modelled and carefully detailed new building provides much needed social housing accommodation for Nuplace whilst retaining and contributing to an active streetscape with commercial space at ground level.
