Chester Train Station

Appointed by MPH Construction, Hughes:O’Hanlon Architects delivered the relocation of front-of-house ticket services at Chester Train Station for Transport for Wales, working from RIBA Stage 2 through to completion. Situated within the Grade II* listed station, the project required a carefully considered architectural response that balanced operational requirements with the sensitivities of the historic environment.

The listed status of the station prohibited any direct connection to the existing fabric, requiring the proposal to be conceived as an independent intervention within the concourse. The design approach sought to create a contemporary addition that remains clearly legible against the historic station architecture, while drawing reference from the materiality and character of earlier interventions carried out across the building over time.
